Google Voices Opposition to Canadian Internet Regulation

13/12/2008

Internet search and media giant, Google Inc., has expressed strong opposition to the CRTC`s recent proposal to regulate web content in Canada, saying that such an action would take away from the experience that users have come to expect from new media.

The Commission should resist the temptation to try to fix what is not broken, Google said in a submission to the regulatory body, responding to a request for public input. Without regulation the Canadian broadcasting policy objectives have been, and will continue to be, implemented on the Internet. The New Media Exemption is the best regulatory approach to keeping the Internet awesome.

Google`s submission was one of almost 100 filed with the CRTC by individuals and corporations that live or do business in Canada. Most of the opinions reportedly echoed the web giant`s opposition to the new regulatory measures.

The CRTC plans to hold public hearings on the issue in February before making a decision on how to proceed.
