A Brazilian software company, Desbloqueiobr.com.br, is claiming to be the first firm to unlock Apple`s new 3G iPhone device, potentially allowing customers to use the handset without signing a contract with an exclusive carrier.
The Desbloqueiobr website shows videos of an iPhone device up and running on a Brazilian network, even though the device won`t officially be available in the country until later this year.
We downloaded the software that was available to everyone, studied it and worked on it until we could get the phone to work here, explained the company`s 25-year-old founder, Breno Masi.
Desbloqueiobr has not yet revealed how much it will charge to unlock customers` iPhones, but Masi says it probably won`t cost more than US$250.
Apple launched its iPhone 3G device in 21 countries last Friday, at a starting price of US$199
