03/07/2008
A 22-year-old Sydney woman has been charged over an alleged scam involving almost $270,000 in mobile phone recharge cards at a shop where she worked.Police say they were contacted by management of a mobile phone shop in Hurstville, in the citys south, last month and a sales audit revealed a major discrepancy in the number of cards sold by its staff. The audit found almost 1,800 recharge cards had been issued by the store in the five months to June. However, no payment had been received for them, a NSW Police Force spokesman says today.
Its estimated the cards were worth more than $268,000.
Police say the young woman, a staff member, was arrested and interviewed yesterday.
She has been charged with 13 counts of obtaining a financial benefit by deception. Police say their investigation continues and further charges may be laid.
The woman was awarded conditional bail to appear in Sutherland Local Court on July 24.
